Joséphine Repetto is the designer and founder of Manjaca
Born in France in 1973 from Guinean - Bissau parents. Graduated with a BA in Spanish. Joséphine Repetto was not destined for an artistic career. She was introduced to the world of Design by chance, encounters and various travels. Furniture Design enabled Joséphine to express her imagination, desires and emotions in a tangible way. Thus in 2004, she founded the company “MANJACA”.
The name “MANJACA” is a glimpse to her Guinean - Bissau tribe.
Although to her African roots, French and European cultures have been a significant inspiration in her work.
Her influences : The minimalist spirit with "Less is more" theory, African art, Surrealism and Pop Art.
Her objective : Insert Manjaca into the day - to - day life and show that different influences can mix.
The result : An astonishing, poetic and original initiatory voyage, through a multitude of objects.
All decorative objects are made by craftsmen in France. Materials are noble and diverse: wengé wood, oak, ebony, zebrano, leather or linens , the finishing is distinctive : sheen, brushed metals, concrete and the Colors are soft: brown, orange , cream or green. For the fabrics, she uses traditional Manjaque fabrics provided by weavers’ workshops in Senegal.
In October 2004 her work was rewarded by UNESCO with an exhibition in honor of Guinea – Bissau’s 30th Year of Independence. That same year she also received the title of French Black Businesswoman of the year in London.
